News Sites

These online news sources should be useful for current events, social studies, media literacy, and other subjects. Most of these sites are the online versions of newspapers and television and radio stations and are most appropriate for teachers and high school students. Sites created specifically for younger children or students are so noted.

U.S. Media | International Media | Sites with Educational Focus

   

U.S. Media

The Christian Science Monitor furnishes in-depth articles and coverage of international issues and education, as well as access to breaking news through The Wire from the Associated Press. A print-only version is available for those with slow connections.

CNN Interactive provides frequently updated headlines as well as longer articles. A multimedia section includes photo galleries, audio and video clips, and animations. Danish-, German-, Japanese-, Italian-, Portuguese-, and Spanish-language versions are available in the World section.

The Drudge Report specializes in quickly publishing news that the mainstream press is not reporting, sometimes because it has not been substantiated or is not true. Useful for finding out about stories and rumors that are circulated before all the facts have been checked (beware!), this site also has links to many wire services, newspapers, and other news sources.

JS Online from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel provides full-text articles on news, sports, business, and entertainment, as well as classified ads.

The New York Times on the Web features national and international news. A search of The New York Times Archive of over 500,000 articles can retrieve articles dating back to 1996. Articles published within the past week are free.

NPR Online provides a live Web broadcast, daily headlines, and articles and online editions of National Public Radio programs such as All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and Talk of the Nation.

The San Jose Mercury News offers headlines, late-breaking news, and articles on national, international, and local Silicon Valley issues.

Time For Kids News provides illustrated news stories written for younger students.

Washington Post.com offers news and a visual section called Camera Works, which merges photojournalism, print journalism, and documentary filmmaking with the interactive properties of the Web.

The White House News and Policies site features White House press releases, audio and video coverage of presidential speeches, text of proclamations, and more.

Yahoo News compiles news stories from a variety of sources every day.

   

International Media

BBC News Online features United Kingdom and international news, including audio and video news bulletins, headlines, and in-depth reports. The BBC News Radio Newsroom presents streaming audio news 24 hours a day, a radio news style guide, and historic news broadcasts such as Neville Chamberlain's declaration of war on Germany in 1939 and the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963.

BRS Web Radio International contains links to radio stations from around the world that broadcast live over the Web.

CBC News Online is the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's online news source. It features print, audio, and video news from a Canadian perspective and a kids site with news stories written for children.

Clandestine Radio.com tracks clandestine radio stations, which are often used as a medium of communication and propaganda for guerilla groups and opposition organizations worldwide. The site includes analysis and links to radio broadcasts such as those of the U.S., the Taliban and the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan.

The International Herald Tribune is the online version of this international daily newspaper.

The Moscow Times.com provides news about Moscow, Russia and the world, in English.

   

Sites with Educational Focus

Assignment the World is a weekly 15-minute news program for grades 4-8. It presents world and national news in a format that encourages interaction. The Web site includes scripts, lesson plans, and other support materials, including news quizzes.

CNN Student News offers a classroom guide that includes the schedule and transcripts for the daily CNN Newsroom program, as well as questions and related Web sites for use with students.

The New York Times Learning Network provides news and current events-related resources for parents, teachers, and students. Among its features are news summaries, thought-provoking lesson plans, Web tours on specific topics, subject area news guides, maps, and a daily news quiz.

Newsday is a collaborative multi-curricular project. Participating students produce their own newspaper using news articles submitted to the Newsday web site by cooperating student correspondents.

Online NewsHour furnishes text and audio versions of in-depth stories from PBS's NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. A video search feature allows users to find and play specific video clips. The site also features Online NewsHour Extra for schools, which indexes stories for teachers by subject area and gives student journalists an opportunity to contribute.

Yahoo K-12 Newspaper Sites provides links to many online school newspapers.
